Message From The President

Rick Moore, Chamber PresidentOne of the most difficult issues for many businesses to deal with at the present time is trying to work out exactly where we are in the economic cycle.   To say that business is living through difficult times is such an under statement that is hardly worth saying.  But it is remarkable how resilient the Leicester & Leicestershire economy is.   Amongst Leicestershire's 38,000 businesses, 84% employ less than 10 people and the diversity of our economy is standing us in reasonable stead in these difficult times particularly when compared with the national picture.  Whilst there can be no guarantees in the future, we can still remain hopeful and positive that our local economy will continue to respond to the challenges and come through our difficulties if not unscathed then at least in reasonable shape to move forward in better times.

We are still hopeful that the revival in manufacturing will continue to help us to move forward and the fact that manufacturing in our local economy represents 50% more of our employees than the national average in itself gives cause for guarded optimism.  I believe that we have an entrepreneurial approach to business in Leicester & Leicestershire and the grit and determination to battle through even the most profound difficulties.   Yes inevitably times such as these bring their casualties but I am hearing as I visit places of employment optimistic messages about improved order books, signs of increasing demand and hopefully the green shoots of a brighter future.
