East Midlands Airport

East Midlands Airport is the UK’s second largest cargo airport after London-Heathrow and the No.1 for “pure” cargo (cargo carried on dedicated aircraft).

In 2005 the airport handled nearly 300,000 tonnes of flown cargo making it the 13th busiest in Europe and in the World’s top 75.

The airport is home to the primary hub operations of DHL, Lufthansa Cargo, UPS and Royal Mail. It is also a “spoke” for TNT, Kalitta Air, Icelandair Cargo and Bluebird Cargo.

Scheduled nightly flights serve New York,Philadelphia(a UPS hub), Wilmington (a DHL hub) in the USA as well as Sharjah and Honk Kong. A weekly flight links NEMA with Chicago. These regular long-haul routes are supplemented by hi-frequency scheduled services to most European capital cities.

East Midlands Airport also handles numerous ad-hoc cargo charter flights carrying anything from Rolls Royce aero-engines to spare parts to keep theToyota car production line running. All aircraft types can be handled, even the mighty six-engines AN225 Mriya, the World’s largest aircraft (bigger than the A380).

The runway at 2,893m long is the UK’s sixth longest and planning permission is being sought to extend to 3,803m.

Over 50% of the on-site workforce of over 6,500 people is now employed by cargo related companies, of which there are over 40 ranging from offices of internationally known conglomerates to one man local enterprises.

East Midlands Airport is also an EU approved Border Inspection Post – a facility allowing the importation of certain animal products into the EU from third countries and not readily available at many UK airports.
