Breaking News 9/4/2014

Nicky Morgan, MP for Loughborough, has been promoted.

She was hosting a delegation from the Chamber of Commerce for Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire at Westminster this morning when she was called away on 'Parliamentary business'.

Moments later, all the Conservative MPs at the meeting received texts telling them Mrs Morgan had been promoted to Economic Secretary to the Treasury.

The move follows the resignation from Cabinet this morning of Culture Secretary Maria Miller on the back of the expenses controversy which has plagued her for the past week.

Mrs Miller has been replaced by Sajid Javid as Culture Secretary. Mrs Morgan moves into Mr Javid's position. It is not yet known who will replace Mrs Morgan.

Chris Hobson, the Chamber's Head of Information and Representation, who was at the meeting, said: "It was quite amusing. First Nicky Morgan was called away on 'Parliamentary matters' and then a few minutes later all the Conservative MPs in  the group received texts announcing her promotion. Congratulations to her."
